                <![CDATA[<p>I’ve been battling quite a bit with time management since the middle of February and have only just come to grips with my time a bit better. It seems like I’m not the only one though!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Many people have recently said to me that they’re feeling quite tired and burnt out, very busy but not accomplishing much. I call it “doing the hamster thing”. You know what it is that they do – they run around on those little wheels in their cages, going nowhere fast. And that’s <em>not</em> a very pleasant feeling. Trust me – I know!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I really believe that in order to manage your time better, you need to decide what’s important to you and what’s not. If you don’t decide, you can be sure that other people will decide for you.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>If something is important to you, you <em>will</em> make time for it. I used to say things like, “I don’t have enough time for exercise because I get home from work too late.” One day I realised that that’s absolute nonsense. Obviously I was making work a higher priority than having a fit and healthy body. It’s as simple as that. Hmmm…</p>
<p> </p>
<p>So this month I want you to take time to focus on yourself. I can just hear all the busy mothers out there saying things like, “but my children need me.” Listen, it’s not a selfish thing to do – instead, it only makes you a better person. I’m also very driven and have hundreds of things on the go so I do know what it’s like. But you can’t give what you don’t have.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>There are seven areas to everyone’s life – spiritual, work, financial, family, friends, health/physical and personal. We constantly give and give and because we all lead such busy lives, it’s very easy for that last section to slip. Hopefully that will be changing soon.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This year I decided that because my personal development is extremely important to me, I need to start scheduling time just for me. What I’ve been doing is scheduling two nights every month to focus on me. If I find interesting worksheets, quizzes or e-books on the internet, I print them and do or read them in this self-time too. I don’t know about you but sometimes I read a book and at the time I’m too lazy to fetch some paper and do the exercises. Now I note them down and do all these exercises during my self-care time.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>You can enjoy your time pampering yourself with a lovely bubble bath, paint your toenails or read a favourite book. Or buy a favourite magazine and read it over some coffee and cake at a quiet coffee shop. Or book yourself on a workshop. I do regular talks and workshops and while I love it, I do enjoy receiving now and again. So every year, I attend at least two workshops.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>For all the unstructured people out there, you’re probably thinking, “where’s the spontaneity?” I’ll do a Dr Phil and ask you this, “how’s the spontaneity been working for you?” I also tried the spontaneity thing and I never seemed to get around to things that were important to me!</p>
<p>I’ve really found this time of self-care very useful and I know that you will too. You’ll be able to really think about what’s working for you and what’s not. I suggest that you buy a pretty notebook, and write it all down. There’s something very special about committing things to paper instead of having it all milling around in your head.</p>

<p>My sister calls her personal time “Shelley time”. Repeat three times: It’s not a sin to have (insert own name here) _____________ time. Very good!</p>
<p>So do the exercise but more importantly, take some action. You are so very worth it!</p>

            <title><![CDATA[Do Not Ignore the Importance of Self-Care]]></title>

                <![CDATA[<p>Many times the hectic pace of life makes it difficult to do the things we need to do for ourselves. Whether it is time alone, meditation, reading, personal growth, or anything else that fills you up, taking the time for self-care is an important activity that should not be ignored.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>NURTURE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOURSELF</strong></p>
<p><br>Many people are driven so much by things such as money, success, recognition, even caring for others such as family and friends, that they forget the importance of relationships not just with others, but with themselves. What I mean by a relationship with yourself is taking the time to fully engage in fulfilling activities that replenish you, replenish your spirit, and allow you to be filled up.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>When you are really “filled up” you are actually in a much better position to be successful in those other areas that drive you. Think about it. There has probably been at least one point in your life where you have felt overwhelmed by something. Stress at work, illness, kids, your spouse – these are all things that most of us will experience at some point in life, and the better prepared you are emotionally, physically and spiritually, the better you are able to handle these situations.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>REMEMBER WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN LIFE</p>
<p><br>Having goals of regarding money, success, recognition are great, and it is important that you have goals, but it is also important to remember that there is more to life than just those goals. It is also important to realize that taking time to nurture your own needs will help you not only achieve your goals, but expand your boundaries as well.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>For this reason you should not feel guilty about taking time for yourself. You are not neglecting other people or other responsibilities when you do so. As a matter of fact, it is not a zero sum gain when you nurture your needs. Instead, the result is that not only are you more fulfilled, but so are the people around you. The synergistic result can lead to results far beyond what you had originally imagined!</p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>YOU CAN DO THIS!</strong></p>
<p><br>So take fifteen or thirty minutes each day for self-care. Whether you meditate, write in a journal, listen to an audio book or podcast, watch a video, doing these things will make you feel better about yourself, make you happier and more relaxed, and help you to become more present in your daily life.</p>

            <title><![CDATA[Practicing Self-Care]]></title>

                <![CDATA[<p>I talk a lot about self-care because I believe this is something that most women need practice at. We’re great at taking care of others and not so good at doing it for ourselves. I am absolutely in this category – I’m well aware that I am no good to anyone if I don’t take care of myself and yet I need to keep reminding myself of this fact. It’s really easy to get into the pattern of “everyone else first” because it feels good to be of service. It makes me happy to see others happy.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>And I’m noticing there are some very clear signals I send myself when it’s time to focus on self-care. <strong>Here are some of my cues &amp; clues that I’ve dropped the self-care ball</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">You know that really cute, giant “welcome home” hug from the kids that knocks you over? If that’s annoying rather than adorable, that’s my first sign.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I get really bitchy at work and stomp rather than walk</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I find myself chanting the “not enough” mantra – there’s not enough time, we don’t have enough money, there’s not enough wine in this glass…</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I get lethargic, apathetic, and have a general urge to curl into a ball on my couch</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I crave the really junky chocolate (the stuff that you know will make you feel like crap) and generally over-eat</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I feel frantic and overwhelmed and say things like “There’s no way I can do all of this!”</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">Normally fun things stress me out (eg. planning a birthday party, ordering Christmas gifts)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I feel chunky and heavy and down on my how my body looks</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Raleway; font-size: 14px;">I smile and laugh much less, and don’t want to talk to anyone</span></li>
</ul>
<p> </p>
<p>A lot of the things that stress me out are external (eg. busy day at work, messy house, ) but the important thing to remember here is that <strong>my ability to deal with these external things is directly related to how well I am taking care of myself</strong>. I can handle the stressful meeting with the VP if I’m taking care of myself. I can happily clean the kitchen and do the laundry if I’m taking care of myself. It’s when I try to do all of those things without taking care of myself that they become overwhelming and stressful. So it’s not the external events, it’s how I am interpreting and dealing with them.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>… <strong>So what is self-care? </strong>Honestly, when I was first asked by my coach what I do to take care of myself all I could come up with was a list of “should do’s” that really just stressed me out – Go to the gym, read smarter books, clean my house, eat something healthy, spend time with kids… etc. I had no idea how to really take care of myself because it had never crossed my mind!</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Since then I’ve been working on this and I’ve come up with a definition of self-care that is working for me:</p>
<p> </p>
<p><em><strong>Doing something that feels really good and fulfills the needs of my highest self.</strong></em></p>
<p> </p>
<p>It’s incredibly important that whatever I do fills both parts of this definition. Lots of things that feel good are actually fulfilling the needs of one of my Saboteurs or Inner Critics. <strong>To be the most nourishing, self-care is really about reconnecting to that part of yourself that is bigger than the physical you</strong>. The universe, your soul, God… whatever your word is that reminds you that you’re part of something more, that we are all connected and that you’re not alone.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>For example, going to the gym is a “no” for me on the Self-Care meter. Sure it feels good after I’m done and exercising is incredibly important, but the reason I was going was not fulfilling my highest self. I was going because I thought I “should” and it was more of a punishment than anything. The belief was that my body in its current form is not good enough and so I “should” go to the gym because I need to fix myself.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Instead I go for walks. I’ve only recently discovered I actually love being outdoors and going for a walk in nature feels amazing! And here’s the trick – <strong>the slower I go, the more the walk fulfills me</strong>. The less I am striving to “make the walk count”, the more I get to really soak in the sights and smells and that’s when I’m connecting to my highest self.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Another example – Sour Cream n’ Bacon chips are freakin’ delicious! On the really rough days, snuggling up on the couch with a bag of those suckers feels really damn good. And they absolutely do not fulfill the needs of my highest self. They fulfill the needs of my “F-it!” Saboteur who tells me I should just do whatever the hell I want because I work hard and “I deserve it, damn it!”. That bitch never has my best interests in mind.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>My highest self loves me completely, and would never choose to pollute my body with crappy food. My highest self treats this body as it would the body of a child- <strong>I love you so much I’m only going to give you the most delicious, nourishing things to keep you in perfect health so you can go into the world and do what you’re here to do</strong>.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>So instead, I am actively practicing listening to my body and giving it what it wants to eat in the moment. This is a new practice for me and I’ve officially dubbed 2013 “The Year of the Body!”. You know what feels really good and fulfills my highest self? Soup, tea, dark chocolate and KALE! (I love that stuff)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Now, here’s the trickiest part about self-care – it’s going to change. <strong>Some days what feels really good and fulfills your highest self will be completely different than other days</strong>. Curling up on the couch and reading a great book can be perfect one day, and another day what you really need is to get outside and move your body. Regular checking in and paying attention is a practice.</p>
